November 1, 2016 (Los Angeles, CA) – Monday night kicked off yet another magnificent 30 Days in LA presented by Red Bull Sound Select. The Palace Theatre was the first venue to host one of the many sold out events for the month. Set to take over the night was British singer/songwriter Sampha, accompanied by newcomers serpentwithfeet and Kelsey Lu. The precedence of black artistry was evident and it was appreciated.
The marquee was enough to excite anyone as it seemed to brighten up all of Downtown LA. The Palace Theatre’s beauty is undeniable; there’s no question as to why the venue was chosen. Upon entering attendees were greeted with wrist bands for complimentary Red Bull beverages, 30 Day goodies, and the most laid-back concierge.

Adding to the night was serpentwithfeet’s Josiah Wise. Making his way in music, he showcased a mixture of textures and tones within his artistry. His passion for expression is evident as his presence dominated the audience’s attend. He shared stories of love, rage, and evolution. More than just a singer, serpentwithfeet is a world full of discoveries. His intimate set was paired beautifully with his eye gazing fashion and piano assisted melodies.

Cellist/singer Kelsey Lu added to the evening’s mood. Her choice of dress paying homage to 18th century fashion accompanied by her cello were the perfect match. Her set was so overwhelming. Her music has a way of soothing the most disturbed souls, but it was her vocals that took priority over the whimsical sounds. Her voice bounced effortlessly off the theatre walls. The amount of training she’s put herself through was admirable. Kelsey has a great ability to manipulate the range of her voice, allowing it to hit some of the strongest, yet subtle notes anyone could ever imagine. Dedicating songs written about her grandmother and today’s injustice, Kelsey Lu displayed her vulnerability and concern for our society.

Sampha wrapped things up as the night’s headliner. The Palace is pretty dark, but his set managed to lighten it up. The Drake collaborator stood confidently behind his piano, as he and his band played various songs, including those from his upcoming debut, “Process.” Sampha’s current single, “Blood on Me,” seemed to be a crowd favorite. He took a moment to share his appreciation for his mother with “No One Knows Me (Like the Piano)” and followed up with “Too Much” which was featured on Drake’s “Nothing Was the Same.”
Red Bull Sound Select Presents: 30 Days in LA has 29 more days to continue this momentum. Kudos to whomever curated this event, it delivered exceptionally well.
