Review: Complex Invades the LBC for ComplexCon
Written By: Malikka Michelle

The hype surrounding Complexcon’s debut was very deserving. It was a bit surreal to see Complex come to life in such a tremendous way. Held at the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center, the event was host to a variety of sights and discoveries; including fashion, art, music, and media. There was definitely something there for everyone. The day events complimented the night, deeming Complexcon to be pretty epic.

Throughout the two day extravaganza, there was a multitude of performances and panel discussions cleverly titled, ComplexCon(versations). On a few panels, audience members were able to see some of today’s moguls and industry leaders discuss their opinions on education, longevity in the game, the future of sports media and the importance social media plays in achieving stardom. It was really difficult picking a favorite topic, but getting to see Wale, Pharrell Williams, Jesse Williams, Ice Cube, and Pusha T share a stage to discuss topics outside of music was very inspiring.

The two day event was filled with loads of musical performances. It was exhilarating. I’m currently in recovery mode from dancing, but I promise you it was worth it. There were two stages in place that played host to some of the weekend’s hottest performances. The Pigeons & Planes Stage got things rocking day-to-day with artists, such as MadeinTYO, Metro Boomin, Kamaiyah, and Chief Keef. As night fell attendees made their way into the ComplexCon Arena to take part in performances by headliners Travis Scott, Kid Cudi, Migos, 2 Chainz, and Snoop Dogg.

Aside from the enjoyment I experienced from the conversations and performances, it was the exhibits that really blew my mind. Each vendor killed it this year. The creativity produced was magnificent and if anyone left inspired to go get it (whatever it might be), it was definitely me. The RSVP Gallery gave off South Beach Miami vibes with their vintage Lamborghini on display.

While Atelier New Regime showcased their Fall/Winter 2016-2017 campaign entitled Orange; the campaign seems to pay homage to Leeloo in The Fifth Element. My favorite set up happened to be by Bait Inc. I was overcome with nostalgia for my childhood seeing statues of Astro boy, Captain Crunch, and Ronald McDonald.

Simple pleasures came from the Snarkitecture lounge area. After walking exploring the convention center and being immersed in all that ComplexCon had to offer, it felt great to relax right in the midst of everything.

Complex out did themselves for sure. With this being ComplexCon’s first year it was very successful and the turnout was amazing. Of course there were a few kinks that needed to be worked out — my suggestion: have pre-purchased wristbands/tickets mailed a few weeks in advance, it’ll help a lot with event day traffic. Aside from that, I’m sure I’ll be present for year two.

Until next time ComplexCon(noisseurs)! See what I did there?
