Fueled by a summer of buckets of beers & questionable BBQ\, a simple idea came to life – let’s create a place where music breaks all barriers & brings together all walks of life. A space where house & hip-hop\, funk & salsa\, reggae & classics could all coexist. Where you would come for the music (vs the name of a DJ)\, stay for the connections & leave with the memories (albeit a bit fuzzy thanks to a carafe of sangria)… a place to do your weekend all-over! \n  \nTwo decades later\, The Do-Over has taken its fun-loving\, funky spirit around the Globe\, sparked lifelong friendships\, marriages (and maybe a divorce or two)\, inspired musical collaborations\, and even helped bring a few babies into the world—sometimes intentionally! We would also like to honor & remember those who are no longer with us but whose energy & love helped shape The Do-Over. \n  \nWhat started as a feeling has become a timeless story — a celebration of community\, culture\, and connection so it only makes sense — we’re celebrating the city that raised us and giving back to the community that keeps it moving. That mission is to find\, create\, and share amazing music. In 1984 he started DJing and producing hip hop and in 1996 he founded the now legendary Stones Throw Records. Via Stones Throw he’s put out some of the most influential albums and artists of our generation. Madlib\, J Dilla\, MF Doom\, Quasimoto\, Lootpack\, Dam-Funk\, Anderson .Paak\, Guilty Simpson\, Oh No\, Knxwledge\, Mndsgn\, the list is endless. His stellar 1999 solo LP\, “My Vinyl Weighs A Ton“\, was hugely influential on us during our formative years. All the while…he’s been buying records. He’s amassed a collection that’s truly the stuff of legend…as varied as it is massive. 8\,000+ of those records are now housed at his infamous Highland Park vinyl bar\, Gold Line\, which he opened in 2018. Last time he rocked at our “Boombox In The Park” event in 2022 he nearly cracked Levitt Pavillion into pieces! We are truly honored to have him back on our decks with an exclusive DJ set to help us celebrate this 19-year milestone! \n  \nHip hop pioneer BREAKBEAT LOU is one of the single most important people in the history of the genre. Starting out as a graffiti writer and b-boy in the Bronx in the early 70s\, he witnessed the birth of hip hop at park jams featuring the likes of Afrika Bambaataa\, Grandmaster Flash\, & Kool Herc. That’s when he knew he wanted to be a DJ. In 1980\, a chance meeting with “Breakbeat” Lenny Roberts at a record pool meeting spawned arguably the most important compilation series of all time. In an early 80s era when drum machines ruled the airwaves\, Lou & Lenny sought to put out records to help showcase the foundational breakbeats they heard at those original park jams. Ultimate Breaks & Beats\, and its predecessor Octopus Breaks\, did just that. Compiling and re-editing rare and iconic breakbeats from across the map\, these compilations introduced generations of young DJs to the foundations of hip hop. When producers like Marley Marl started sampling in the mid 80s\, these records became integral source material to pull from. To this day THOUSANDS of songs have sampled them and you’d be hard-pressed to find a producer that hasn’t used them or a DJ that doesn’t have multiple copies of them. We couldn’t be more hyped to be bringing the icon back to LA to rock with us for this special occasion! \n  \nIt’s hard to believe it’s been a full 19 years since we started this little party\, but we’re honored to still be playing and presenting this music in Los Angeles.
