As a little girl I never heard Prince’s music in my house but I’d hear his name whispered between the grown ups in the late evening just before bedtime when the tone of the music changed. See for a little church girl his music wasn’t supposed to be for me. Shame cause what was for me and a whole lot of others who missed out on Prince would be his creativity.
There’s a story that always comes to mind about the time I was at a liquor store in Watts with my mother and on the album cover was Prince naked sitting on the counter in the store. My mom mentioned it was inappropriate, the cashier turned it around but had to add it’s selling tho’.
After high school I was formally introduced to Princes music at the time by good friend Antoine (DJ Yella). Watching him vibe to the music and explain the lyrics to me through a crash course in music gave me an appreciation for his creativity. I mean who wouldn’t with the dopest dj from NWA teaching you Prince 101.
Amazing what I learned from his music, I’m truly a B-side girl with songs like Power Fantastic, The Ladder, When 2 R In Love, Wonder You and more. So you can imagine how devastated I was to hear he was gone. RIP Prince as long as I’m alive you will always be one of my all time favorites ❤️??
